ING Nederland - Seamless Transition to Reusables From A to SEA

As one of the largest employers in the Netherlands, ING, in partnership with YoYo.BoostReuse, has successfully transitioned to reusable cups across all offices, reducing single-use waste. The sustainable journey began with YoYo managing a pilot at ING HQ, followed by a nationwide implementation.

Tailored Circular Solutions for Success

A customized approach was essential, considering the unique characteristics of each location and aligning with ING's sustainability targets. YoYo.BoostReuse provided vital support through 360° project management and step-by-step guidance.

Smooth Implementation Journey

Guidance encompassed advice on various reuse systems, reusable tableware, and dishwashing conditions. A successful pilot phase at ING HQ achieved an impressive almost 99% return rate before the full country implementation. Meticulous logistics planning, including timely product delivery, ensured a seamless transition.

Building a Culture of Reuse

Fostering a culture of reuse involved creating comprehensive communication materials and targeted training sessions for thousands of employees. This engagement was crucial in demonstrating the benefits and practices of reusable systems.

Rigorous Assessment for Success

The success of the implementation was rigorously assessed. User and personnel satisfaction, the amount of avoided single-use waste, and the positive CO2 impact were meticulously calculated and reported.

Stakeholder Alignment and Ongoing Monitoring

Given the project's size and complexity, alignment with all stakeholders, including CBRE, EUREST, CSU, and SELECTA, was paramount. YoYo.BoostReuse facilitated the execution by closely monitoring all locations, conducting stock counts, and assessing employee satisfaction throughout the project.

Impact and Feasibility

The pilot phase, with an almost 99% return rate, paved the way for a successful full country implementation managed by YoYo, preventing over 2.6 million single-use cups annually. This case study illustrates that transitioning to reusable tableware is not only feasible at a large scale but also achievable with genuine engagement and commitment from all parties.

This story underscores the importance of a strategic, customized approach, stakeholder engagement, and the critical role of execution for a sustainable transition to reusable solutions.

Sustainable Transformation at Provincie Zuid-Holland

Reducing Disposable Cups with Sustainable Alternatives

With over 1 million disposable coffee cups thrown out every year, Provincie Zuid Holland decided it is time to switch to a sustainable solution. With our help, their office cafes and coffee corners will no longer provide single use cups.

Due to the size of the organisation, this ongoing project brings on a unique challenge . That’s why we work with a pilot first. We test what works and what doesn’t on a smaller scale so we make sure everything is in order before we roll it out completely.

In the future more than 1700 employees will have adopted a new way of drinking takeaway coffee, or tea. As with all our projects, we went to the drawing board to come up with a tailor made solution. During the staff training we used video material specifically made for them to inform about the impact and implementation of this sustainable transition.

The focus of the implementation will be to replace the single use coffee cups from over 50 coffee stations in their organisation. As a result of the implementation for Provincie Zuid Holland, we will be able to heavily reduce their packaging waste. Not only does it have an environmental impact, but financial as well.

Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat Journey to Reusables

Implementing a Tailored Reusable Solution

Back in 2020 the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken decided they needed help implementing a reusable solution that would work best for their organisation and catering operations.

A request for a custom solution. Reducing the disposable waste of nearly 6000 employees was no small feat. Especially since the ministry not only commissioned the work for themselves, but also for the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Two large organisations in one project location.

Both ministries required a full overhaul of the way they dealt with single use takeaway tableware. Additionally, they were adamant at reducing their CO2 footprint and wanted a bespoke solution that fit like a glove. Meaning the right reusable tableware, return system, perfect training of staff and of course a seamless transition. Initially we took care of the full transition, from designing the strategy, to the full implementation of tableware and return stations.

We organised workshops and trained the staff accordingly. On-site promotional material helped staff get used to the idea of transitioning. To this day the ministry still works with our solution. Presently we keep assisting them with communications and monitoring of their CO2 impact. Additionally we help them with other useful implementations and advice to reduce their takeaway disposables.

This turned out to be a project where we went above and beyond to take care of their sustainability journey.

PWC's Consultation and Impact Analysis for Sustainability

Consulting and Impact Analysis for Sustainability at PWC

PWC contacted us from a different angle. They didn’t so much need reusable cups or promotional material, but mostly consulting and impact analysis.

Making assessments, gauging the situation, and providing feedback on where to improve. A service we also carry out. PWC wanted an organisation to be able to work with the return system they already had. An adaptive approach was needed. They requested help on how to improve their waste-free transition. A challenging task, moreover since it covers 2 offices in 2 different cities.

We analysed their structure and implementations, and provided feedback. We advised them on communications and design. As PWC were determined to work with materials made in their own house style, we had a couple of feedback rounds to make sure all the input was correct. Return stations, cups and tableware were all reviewed. We prepared the organisation for best communications, location of return stations and planned a pilot.

After implementation we provided regular CO2 impact reports. PWC very much valued the problem solving nature that we at YoYo provide. We looked at their organisation, and focused on what was important to them. With over 500 employees, together we made a great impact on reducing single-use waste.

Yes!Delft's Sustainable Catering Revolution with Reusables

Yes!Delft, a prominent tech incubator, is leading the charge in zero-waste dining by adopting a reusable tableware approach for their in-house catering, YES!Catering, and going beyond the Dutch ban on Single-Use Plastic Products.

Project Objectives and Achievements:

Comprehensive Reusable Solution: Almost all takeaway meals, drinks, and snacks, ranging from smoothies to salads and fries, are now served in reusable tableware.

Impressive Return Rate: Achieved a nearly 100% return rate, showcasing high user engagement and excellent implmentation process.

Strategic Partnership with YoYoBoostReuse: Collaborated to overcome challenges and implement the reusable solution seamlessly from A to Sea.

Innovative Return Stations: Designed and tested two different return station designs to enhance user experience and engagement.

Customized Return System: Developed a tailored return system to meet the specific needs of the workplace environment and catering team preferences.

Implementation Insights:

Impact Monitoring Results: Annually, around 20,000 disposables were avoided due to replacing them with reusable alternatives. A reduction in CO2-eq was achieved and reported by YoYo, further highlighting the positive environmental impact of the initiative.

Simplicity in Process: Customers order what they want and receive it in a reusable alternative, from plates and cups to soup bowls and cutlery. After use, they return it to one of the designated collection points within the building, eliminating the need for a deposit system.

Transition from Disposable to Reusable: Before partnering with YoYoBoostReuse, the catering company primarily used disposable packaging, leading to significant waste. The transition to reusable was driven by a desire to reduce this waste while catering to the unique needs of their customers who take orders back to their workspaces.

Engagement and Awareness: To maintain a low-barrier approach without introducing a deposit system, YoYoBoostReuse designed communications and assisted with staff training to educate customers on the return process.
